India. Jindal Steel plans to commission steel plant in Orissa.
Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) plans to commission steel plant in Angul district of Orissa by October 2010 having a capacity of 6 million tons per annum (MTPA), reports Business Standard.
The first phase will have a capacity of 3 mtpa at an investment of Rs 40 billion for the acquisition of land, equipments and placing orders for equipments.
Novolipetsk Steel to buy John Maneely for $3.5 bln.
Novolipetsk Steel one of Russia's largest steel producers, said on Wednesday it had signed a final agreement to acquire the U.S.-based pipe manufacturer John Maneely Company (JMC) for $3.53 billion.
Under the deal, Novolipetsk Steel will acquire the U.S. steel pipe and tube producer from a group of shareholders, including global private equity firm Carlyle Group and the Zekelman family, on a debt free, cash free basis. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be closed in the fourth quarter.
India’s largest steel maker, Tata Steel has signed a $5 billion joint venture investment agreement in Vietnam to set up an integrated steel complex with 4.5 million tonne capacity.
Tata Steel will own 65 per cent stake in the joint venture, while Vietnam Steel Corporation gets 30 per cent and the remaining 5 per cent goes to Vietnam Cement Industries. Both these companies are state-owned firms. Vietnam Steel is Vietnam's largest steel company and currently produces around 5 million tonne steel per annum.
Bulgarian steel mill declared bankrupt, sale seen likely.
A Bulgarian steel mill owned by Indian businessman Pramod Mittal is bankrupt, a court ruled Wednesday, paving the way for the plant's sale.
Ukrainian billionaire Konstantin Zhivago and ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, have expressed interest in the communist-era Kremikovtsi plant, which reportedly has debts of at least 800 million euros (1.25 billion dollars).
PERHAPS Professor Allan Fels, who has said planning laws are restricting supermarket competition, could have a look at the steel industry. BlueScope Steel is trying to stop the Land and Environment Court approving a painting production line installed by Ace Gutters in a light industrial area at Mortdale. Ace Gutters had bought painted-steel products from BlueScope and now seeks to be a competitor.
Nigeria threatens to shut down all steel rolling mills.
Daily Champion reported that, disturbed by reported cases of building collapse in the country, the Standards Organization of Nigeria has threatened to shut down all steel rolling mills in the country, especially in Ogun state, if they fail to comply with the Nigerian Industrial Standards on steel bars for reinforcement of concretes.
India: Steel Ministry has asked Steel Industry not to hike prices.
The Minister for Steel, Chemicals and Fertilisers Shri Ram Vilas Paswan has expressed the hope that the steel industry will not raise prices after 7th August in national interest. Talking to newsmen he said Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has been asked not to hike prices. Shri Paswan said, in view of the exceptional situation, he would like the industry to cooperate. He said the government wants the steel industry to prosper and is giving facilities directly and indirectly to favourably impact the cost. But so long as the industry earns reasonable profit, where is the need to raise prices, he asked.

China's steel industry faces supply glut in second half: expert.
China faces a steel surplus in the second half of the year with production capacity continuing to grow and demand expected to drop, a senior industry official warned.
Several large steel mills are due to start operations in the second half of the year, sharply increasing crude steel supply, said Shan Shanghua, head of the China Iron and Steel Association.

POSCO's vision is to become the world's largest producer of steel plates by the year 2011. Used primarily in ship-making, steel plates are under great demand around the globe.
POSCO announced Wednesday it will invest W1.8 trillion (US$1=W1,007) in a new steel plate plant in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province to be completed in three years and with an annual capacity of two million metric tons of steel plates. Another W1.4 trillion has been injected into POSCO's steel plant in the company's hometown of Pohang.
South Africa. Price fixing scandal rocks steel industry.
The Competition Commission has announced that steel prices in South Africa are being manipulated by a cartel. The revelation was made a short while after the JSE closed for trade.
The commission says it has confirmation that some of the country's major steel producers are fixing prices. Some of these companies are listed on the stock exchange.

With steel prices doubling in the past two months, to nearly US$1100 per tonne in the United States, the companies most vulnerable to higher prices are are those whose end product is sold directly to the consumer, according to a UBS survey of its analysts who cover businesses who use steel in their manufacturing.

Nippon Steel says emissions rules may force overseas growth.

Nippon Steel Corp., Japan's largest maker of the metal, said it may be forced to increase production overseas should it be disadvantaged compared with rivals under new international climate change rules under discussion.
The steelmaker may have "no choice but to shift to Brazil and other overseas countries to expand output" Nippon Steel Executive Vice President Hideaki Sekizawa, said in a Bloomberg Television interview in Tokyo after China, India and 14 other nations at the Group of Eight summit in Toyako, Japan last week considered long-term emission cuts.

German industry joins forces to attack steelmakers.
Germany's biggest steel consumers banded together on Wednesday to send a warning to producers that high prices are driving a dangerous wedge between them.
"In the past, the partner-like relationship between our members and the steel industry was an element of our mutual success," a group of seven German industry associations said in a joint statement.
DEM Wire Rolling Technology, a company specialised in cold rolling processes and well-known for its cold rolling cassettes, has, thanks to its considerable experience on these machines, developed a special High-Speed Ribbed Bar Line starting from wire rod in coils and finishing with 4.0 to 16 mm diameter ribbed wire in bars in lengths ranging from 0.9 – 14 m, running at speeds of up to 8 m/sec.

STEEL prices are set for another rise next month, bringing total increases in some product lines so far this year to 72%.
ArcelorMittal SA said yesterday prices would go up 3%-7% next month on rising international prices. Long and flat products would rise an average of R500 a ton. Wire rod would rise 14%, or up to R1000 a ton, Mittal spokesman Tami Didiza said. The move was necessitated by rising input costs and was in line with international prices.

Baosteel and rivals form JV ahead of Guangdong Steel rationalization.
China's leading steel maker Baosteel Group said on Tuesday it would form a 35.86 billion yuan (5.12 billion U.S. dollars) joint venture in Guangzhou with two domestic rivals.
Baosteel is to own 80 percent of the new company, with a 28.688 billion yuan investment, while Guangzhou Iron and Steel Enterprises and Shaoguan Iron and Steel Group will take a combined 20 percent stake with existing assets, Baosteel said in statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
India: steel output growth slows, falls below Asian average.
India has recorded the lowest growth rate in steel production among the five Asian countries for the first five months of 2008.
Indian steel production grew by 4.1 per cent during January-May against an Asian average of 7.9 per cent, according to data available with the International Iron & Steel Institute (IISI).

South Korea's POSCO said it would cut stainless steel output by 25,000 tonnes in July due to inventory build-up as buyers delay purchases on expectations of lower prices.
"We've decided to cut output in July in an attempt to normalise market conditions and will keep our production schedule flexible," a POSCO spokeswoman said.

A booming market for steel is paying off big for two Los Angeles-area companies. L.A.-based Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. said Tuesday that it had agreed to buy a smaller metal processor from Beverly Hills-based buyout firm Platinum Equity for more than $300 million.
New Delhi. Tata Steel Ltd said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Rawmet Ferrous Industries Ltd has entered into a Share Subscription Agreement and Shareholders' agreement with Jasper Industries Pvt Ltd. The agreement will help Tata Steel to set up a coal-based power plant of 2X67.5 MW capacity at Anantpur Village in Orissa, a company statement said.
